Owners advised to feed according to workload for a healthy horse and healthier pocket

Horse owners should pay particular attention to the dietary requirements of their animals as autumn approaches and summer grazing comes to an end.

As the temperature falls many horses and ponies are being brought off summer grazing and stabled for the winter on a diet of haylage or hay. “It is important to introduce these dietary changes slowly to avoid any unnecessary health problems,” explains Robin Lewis, Equine Manager for Wynnstay Group PLC.

Rapid changes to diet and the introduction of too much compound feed can cause problems such as colic and tying up. Horse owners should therefore ensure that each animal receives a ration that is specific to its individual workload Mr Lewis warns. “Feeding too much is not only dangerous for animals with a low workload, but is also costly and can be damaging to the pocket. Owners should therefore tailor a diet that is specific to their horse or pony’s individual requirements.”

“If owners are in any doubt they should contact their local equine nutritionist or pop into their local Wynnstay Store for a free consultation with one of the in-store equine specialists,” says Mr Lewis. “Wynnstay stocks a wide variety of compound horse feeds and supplements and our staff are always happy to provide the very best advice.”

Wynnstay is hosting a series of equine open days in its stores across Wales and the West Midlands throughout September and October. Wynnstay’s team of equine specialists will be on hand along with feed specialists from Dodson and Horrell, Youngs and Baileys to offer advice on a range of topics from horse health and feeding, to lameness, foot-trimming and worming.

Visitors to the open days will also be able to take advantage of a number of special offers on Wynnstay’s extensive range of branded and own label equine products. Offers include 20% off selected Horseware and Masta rugs, 10% off all NAF products as well as price reductions on selected wormers, bedding, clothing and Lister clippers.

The equine open days are taking place at the following Wynnstay stores throughout September and October from 9:00am onwards:
