Wynnstay completes latest phase of capital investment at its Llansantffraid feed mill

Livestock feed supplier, Wynnstay, has recently completed the first phase of a £0.5 million investment project at its ruminant feed mill at Llansantffraid in Powys.

The project to upgrade the mill facilities at Llansantffraid has been ongoing for a number of months and includes the installation of a new computer and software system which control the mill’s blending, batch-weighing and product despatch facilities. The new system provides added flexibility to milling operations as well as improved levels of productivity. As a result, total capacity at the mill has increased by more than 20 per cent taking daily throughput up from 650 tonnes per day to in excess of 800 tonnes.

“These improvements mean that Wynnstay’s range of feeds can be produced to the very highest levels of accuracy,” explains Gareth Davies, Wynnstay’s head of agriculture. “That gives us a distinct advantage over many older mills and means that our farmers can order bespoke feeds that are produced to the finest tolerances. In addition, the whole mill process now operates much more quickly whilst still offering the same levels of complete traceability. For farmers, that means a shorter time from placing an order to taking delivery, as well as greater confidence in the product they are buying.”

“We have been working hard behind the scenes during the long winter months to minimise disruption to our customers. The work has been carried out in phases in order to maintain a smooth flow of production and to ensure that we have been able to fulfil all existing orders.”

The next phase of the investment plan is to install a fully automated routing system which will further increase the mill’s efficiency and throughput levels. Automated pellet pressing facilities will then be installed to increase the throughput of compound feeds at the mill.

“The dairy and livestock sectors are a crucial part of our business,” Mr Davies adds. “The ongoing development of our feed mills at Llansantffraid, Rhosfawr and Carmarthen highlights our dedication to these sectors, and will ensure that Wynnstay is well placed to support farmers throughout our increasing trading area for many years. We look forward to working closely with our customers to provide the very best locally produced feeds.”
