Typhon for summer forage
The distinct possibility of a very dry summer is already focusing the minds of many milk producers on a potential shortage of forage this year.
Forward thinkers are planning to drill Tyfon – the stubble turnip/Chinese cabbage hybrid – to ensure they do not run out of grazing should the predicted summer drought occur.
|
Tyfon can be sown in late March to early April – once the danger of frost has passed - and can be ready for grazing just eight to ten weeks later. It is a leafy, well anchored turnip which can yield 40 to 50 tonnes per hectare or more at around 16% crude protein and about 11.2 MJ/kg dry matter.
With such a short growth cycle it is ideal for years like this where the chances are forage will be in short supply.
For summer calvers Tyfon also provides a guaranteed good start rather than relying on grass which may not be there. In addition it is ideal entry for August grass reseeds as it breaks the insect cycle and cleans the soil.
