Latest wheat and barley varieties on show at trial site open day
A cereal crop trial site open day, which is being held at Much Wenlock on Wednesday 24 th June, is set to provide the ideal opportunity for the arable farmers from across the West Midlands and Welsh Borders to select next season’s winter wheat and barley varieties with many of the latest recommended varieties on display.

A superb selection of wheat and barley varieties are being grown at the trial site, which is run by Syngenta in conjunction with Wynnstay Arable. There is a new variety in each of the NABIM groups including Gallant, the brand new milling variety which has come straight in as the highest yielding winter wheat group 1 variety. Also being trialled are Panorama, the top yielding group 2 variety, and Scout, the latest biscuit making wheat variety.
Visitors to the open day will also be able to view a trial plot of the feed variety Grafton which is the stiffest strawed variety currently available and which has the added advantage of being suitable for early sowing. In addition, visitors will also be able to examine a plot of KWS Cassia, the improved version of popular feed barley Saffron, one of the region’s best selling barley varieties in recent years.
“This year’s trial plots include the very best selection of varieties that Wynnstay has ever offered,” reckons Richard Torr, arable seeds manager for Wynnstay. “Last year’s plots were missing a few key varieties, but this year we have made sure that there is something to hold everyone’s interest - whether they are growing cereals for milling purposes or for feeding livestock.”
“There are some cracking new varieties coming onto the market this year and this is a unique opportunity for the region’s farmers to see all of the best varieties growing locally, alongside some of the more familiar varieties, under a range of four different input regimes,” Mr Torr adds. “There will also be an opportunity to examine and discuss some of Syngenta’s crop protection plots and to learn about the latest developments in disease and pest control.”
The one-day event is being held at Walton Grange on the A458 Much Wenlock to Bridgnorth road by kind permission of CH Hill and Son on Wednesday 24 th June from 11:00am through to 5:00pm. All cereal growers are welcome to attend and refreshments and a hog roast will be available throughout the day.
