Grass and roots seed specialist Ben Wixey has just joined the Herbage Trials Advisory Committee (HTEC).
As a committee member Ben will contribute towards the continued improvement of the Herbage Variety Guide which in turn assists in the improvement of grass varieties in the UK.
|
The Guide includes seed varieties which have been independently tested and trialled by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB). It assists farmers, breeders and merchants by ensuring the quality of seed varieties available.
The Herbage Variety Guide is a very important tool for both farmers and merchants. Wynnstay will only use grass varieties which are included in the Guide as this guarantees that we are providing farmers with the highest yielding grasses available on the market.
The committee meets twice a year to discuss protocols and data collection from the trials, with the Guide being released annually in October. It consists of 12 members from merchants, breeders and farmers as well as representatives from Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Ben, who has a degree in agriculture, has been with Wynnstay for six years and has more than 16 years’ experience in the industry. He also sits on the Organic Seed Working Committee.
