Peas

Varieties

The market is split into three different categories of peas. The highest yielding white peas can suit some premium markets but are generally used in animal feeds. Marrowfat varieties are usually used for the human consumption as canned or dried packet sales. Marrowfats are mainly grown in the east where the normally drier conditions increase the chances of gaining top premiums and help minimise problems at harvest caused by the generally weaker strawed varieties.

Blue peas, which produce a green coloured sample, are by far the most widely grown. Varieties like the stiff strawed Nitouche helped develop this market and we now have many end users for this type of pea. Some are used for human consumption but the majority are used in the pet food industry as a cut or micronised product.

Prophet is the market leader due to its combination of top yield, stiff straw and a very marketable sample.

Zero 4 is also a blue pea which is 2 – 3 weeks earlier to mature and exceptionally stiff in the straw. It is lower yielding than Prophet but as it matures so much earlier, it can be harvested before winter wheat and therefore avoid the peak harvest workload.
